On Feburary 28, 2008, the Unit hosted the forum, Times for innovation in ECE: Challenging our ways of thinking about educators’ and children’s learning, with special guests Karin and Per Alnervik from Sweden. This forum drew on experiences in Sweden that can help promote new ways of thinking of early childhood services in British Columbia and Canada. In 1998, Sweden developed and implemented a National Curriculum for early childhood that was designed to focus on children’s learning processes. Using this perspective, Sweden has created early childhood institutions where care and learning are inseparable. This seminar addressed the reasons why new questions and challenges in early childhood require new ways of ensuring ‘quality’ in early childhood services.
