Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Anderson Association?

The 'Anderson Association a.s.b.l.' is a not for profit local NGO (non governmental organization) registered with the government of Rwanda to carry out humanitarian activities in the sectors of health, education and moral leadership development in Rwanda.

The NGO official registration certificate is No. 071/04 and is dated 12 November 2004. It was issued by the Rwandan Government Ministry of Local Administration, Good Governance, Community Development and Social Affaires. The NGO was set up to ensure long term sustainability and allow the development of the local capacity in running the programmes through a board of directors.

What inspired the first project?

The first project of the Association was been to build the 'Joan Anderson Memorial Dispensary' in Gatenga, Kigali, Rwanda. This project was inspired by the life of Joan Anderson who was a Canadian Nurse dedicated to the advancement of the native peoples of Canada.  She traveled extensively and loved Africa very much.  When she passed away in the year 2000, the Anderson family initiated the construction of the clinic in her memory.

As of 2007, over $150,000Cdn has been invested in developing the site of the dispensary, housing for staff, meeting areas, dormitory and general preparations for future developments.  All buildings are constructed of concrete blocks.  The dispensary is 12 x 22 meters.

The remaining needs are :

(a) Hook up the building to water which is available on the site about two hundred meters away.

(b) Build a secure fence around the property

(c) Build incinerator for proper disposal of medical waste.

(d) Finish equiping the building with furniture and medical equipment and medicines.

(e) Volunteer healthcare professionals to assist with ongoing operations.

Where is the Health Center located?
The Joan Anderson Memorial Dispensary is located in Gatenga, Rwanda on mount Rebero, about eight kilometers away from the nearest available dispensary.
Why was it built there?
An estimated population of about 30,000 people of Gatenga and Butamwa would have access to basic health care needs. An estimated 100 persons a day would be served once the facility is fully operational and its reputation has had time to be established with the local population.

A total of three four staff are working now. There are experienced healthcare workers in Rwanda. Two Nurses, another Nurse/Admin assistant and a labratory technition.

Once fully operational an extension service is planned to Rutoma on Lake Muhazi about fifty kilometers from Gatenga. This would be a one day a week service to begin with.

How much does the clinic charge?

User fees will be the same as those of the Government of Rwanda health facilities, which are generally the lowest available. Hopefully these fees will eventually be enough to cover the regular running costs to allow the service to be self sustaining in the long run.
